eBay variation listings: sizes and colours in one listing

Updated · 5 min read

A variation listing lets you sell one product in several sizes, colours or styles from a single listing. The buyer picks the option they want from a drop-down. Used well, it keeps your shop tidy and your stock in one place.

What is an eBay variation listing?

A variation listing is a single fixed-price listing that contains several versions of the same item. eBay’s own example is a T-shirt of the same brand and style that comes in different colours and sizes.

On the listing page, the buyer chooses from drop-downs, such as Size and Colour, and sees the price, stock and photos for that option. On your side, you manage one listing instead of one per option.

If every unit is identical, you don’t need variations at all. A multi-quantity listing sells many of the same item from one listing. As eBay puts it, you only need one listing per item, no matter how many you have in stock.

eBay’s help page says most categories are set up for variations. If you don’t see the option to add them, check that you’ve chosen fixed price, and that your category supports variations.

When should you use variations?

Use variations when the items are the same product and differ only in things like size, colour, material or pattern. eBay’s duplicate listings policy points sellers towards this: list items with variations such as size and colour in one fixed-price listing with variations.

Don’t use variations to put different things in one listing. eBay’s search manipulation policy does not allow offering a choice of different products in a single listing, selling different brands or models together (its example is an iPhone 6 and an iPhone 7), or selling new and used items in the same listing.

A simple test: would a buyer see the options as the same product? A T-shirt in red or blue, yes. A T-shirt and a hoodie, no, even if they’re the same brand.

What you’re sellingVariation listing?
The same T-shirt in sizes S to XL and three coloursYes
The same mug in four coloursYes
Ten identical units of one item, one size, one colourNo variations needed. Use a multi-quantity listing.
The same item, some new and some usedNo. List new and used separately.
Two different products, such as a kettle and a toasterNo. One listing for each.
Two different models, such as an older and a newer versionNo. eBay doesn’t allow different models in one listing.

What goes in item specifics and what goes in variations?

Anything that is the same for every option belongs in item specifics. eBay’s help page describes these as the features that are standard across all of the items. Brand, material, style and department usually go here.

Anything that changes from one option to the next belongs in the variation details. Size and colour are the usual ones, but it could be pattern, length or capacity.

Don’t fix a value in item specifics that changes between options. If the listing comes in five colours, a single Colour item specific of Red tells buyers the wrong thing.

Your title works the same way. Describe the product, and if there’s room, say it comes in several sizes or colours rather than naming just one.

eBay variation limits

These figures come from eBay UK’s help page on multi-quantity listings and listings with variations. Check that page before building a large listing, as eBay can change its limits.

Most listings need far fewer. Five sizes in four colours is 20 variations. Only add options you actually have, or can reliably get, in stock.

How to set price, stock and photos for each variation

OneDS’s Chrome extension can draft variations on an eBay listing from an Amazon UK product page, for you to check and edit before you publish.

  1. Choose fixed price (Buy It Now) and the correct category.
  2. Fill in item specifics for the features that are the same across every option, such as brand, material and style.
  3. Add your variation details, such as Size and Colour, and the values for each. Use eBay’s own values where they’re offered.
  4. Set a quantity and a price for each variation. eBay lets them differ, so a larger size can cost more.
  5. Add photos for each option. Variation photos are linked to one variation detail, usually colour, so buyers see the right item when they pick it.
  6. Check the full grid of options before you publish. A single wrong price or quantity is easy to miss.

Common variation listing mistakes

  • Mixing products, brands, models or conditions. This breaks eBay’s search manipulation policy.
  • A title that only fits one option, such as “Red Size 10” on a listing with five colours. Describe the product, and let the variations cover the options.
  • Photos that don’t match the option. If a buyer picks blue and sees red, expect questions or a return.
  • Values named three different ways, such as “L”, “Lg” and “Large”. Pick one style and stick to it, ideally eBay’s own values.
  • Stock that isn’t kept up to date. If you sell an option you no longer have, you’ll have to cancel. eBay’s seller standards policy counts a seller cancelling because an item was out of stock as a transaction defect.
  • A typo in one variation’s price. Check each price, not just the first one.
  • Option names that are vague, such as “Style A” or “Option 2”. Buyers should know exactly what they’re choosing.

Questions

How many variations can an eBay listing have?

eBay UK’s help page says up to 250 variations in one listing at no additional fee, using up to 5 variation details with up to 50 values each.

Can I set different prices for different sizes or colours?

Yes. Each variation can have its own price and its own quantity.

Can I sell new and used items in one variation listing?

No. eBay’s search manipulation policy doesn’t allow items in different conditions in the same listing. List them separately.

Can auction listings have variations?

No. Variations are for fixed-price (Buy It Now) listings.

Why can’t I see the option to add variations?

Check that you’ve chosen fixed price rather than auction, and that your category supports variations. eBay says most categories do, but not all.
